Now Seeking Submissions - The Comeuppance by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins

Synopsis: When a group of old classmates meet to pregame their twentieth high school reunion, everyone is nervous for the night ahead. As alcohol and pot help the self-declared “Multi-Ethnic Reject Group” let their guards down, they begin to reminisce about their teenage selves and reveal how their lives have unfolded since graduation. Did their friendships stand the test of time, or will they realize they don’t have as much in common as they thought they did? Brilliantly witty, theatrical, and moving, The Comeuppance focuses on millennials and their reckoning with the world they will soon inherit.

Casting Breakdown

EMILIO – Black or Latino man around 40, from the Prince George area of Maryland. He’s a successful artist living in Berlin for the last 15 years. On the surface he seems to have it all, but deep down he’s wrestling with missed opportunities with a past love. This unresolved emotion manifests as deep, aggressive resentment that occasionally bursts out until he explodes. Emilo takes a few puffs on a joint and moons his friends in the play. Nudity: Lower rear non-sexual nudity for Emilo only and briefly. He’s mooning (pulls his pants down to reveal his butt) his friends as they walk up to Ursula’s house.

URSULA – Black or Latina woman around 40, from the Prince George area of Maryland. She’s been living alone since her grandmother passed away a few years ago, which is challenging as her diabetes has caused her to go blind in one eye (wears an eye patch and uses a cane in the play) and is losing vision in her other eye. Though reserved, she speaks up when necessary and always wants her friends to enjoy themselves. She’s a loyal and supportive friend, and also a bit shy as she doesn’t reveal that she has a girlfriend. She smokes a joint. LGBTQ+ strongly encouraged to submit

CAITLIN – BIPOC woman around 40 from the Prince George area of Maryland. She harbors deep resentment as one of the smartest girls in high school who married a much older man immediately after graduation. Her husband now holds extreme political views and participated in the January 6th riot. When she reconnects with her high school lover, despite his potentially abusive past, she clings to him—fantasizing about the different life she could have had. She smokes a joint on stage.

KRISTINA – BIPOC woman around 40 from the Prince George area of Maryland. Former service member, now a doctor, married to an older man and, as a former devout Catholic, has 5 children. With her stressful life, she rarely gets breaks, so when an opportunity to party arises, she takes it to the extreme. Her mood can shift from calm to intense instantly, and she becomes upset with anyone who dampens the festive atmosphere. In reality, she drinks to numb her feelings. When the pressure becomes too much, she breaks down emotionally, confessing that she feels lost in her failing marriage and confused about her connection with a female surgeon at work.

FRANCISCO – Black or Latino man around 40, from the Prince George area of Maryland. He is a veteran who served in Iraq and carries the emotional scars of his military service, relying on various medications for his mental health. Though hesitant about attending the party, he decided to come specifically to see Caitlin, his old high school love. Desperate for approval from everyone, he tries hard to connect with Emilio, but his PTSD makes it difficult to control his emotions, ultimately triggering a seizure that causes him to lose bladder control in front of everyone.
